What happens after a plane crash?

I was wondering, what happens after a family member dies in a plane crash. Do the victums familys get any kind of money from the airlines, or does the airline have insurance that pays for these incidents. I am just wondering because i know with cruise lines, unless the ship is sinking you wont be compensated for a missed port of call due to bad weather, but i know the airline will try to make up for having to reroute your plane due to bad weather.
